Italy, January, 2019
Back to Vacation Album home page
In 2019 we decided to accept a longstanding invitation to visit our friends Giuseppe, Claudia, and little Sophia in Sicily, and then spend a couple of weeks seeing some of the Italian mainland. We flew to Rome on January first, stayed overnight, and then flew on to Catania, Sicily the next day. After 6 wonderful days in Sicily, we flew back to Rome and took a train to Florence, staying five days, including a day trip to Siena. From Florence we took the train to Orvieto, staying four days, then on to Rome for our final five days in Italy. We stayed in B&Bs in Florence and Orvieto, and in a charming hotel in Rome.
The trip was a wonderful adventure! We are extremely grateful to Giuseppe's parents, Maria and Nino, for giving up their apartment, and to the entire family for showing us such a splendid time in Sicily. And the food! Our visit to the mainland was excellent, with plenty of art, architecture, and history to keep us busy. And the food! The Italians we met were friendly and patient with our limited Italiano, and the weather cooperated marvelously. We were thankful we decided to visit in the off season, when the crowds are small and the buses and trains uncrowded (except for two days in Rome during a transit strike.) We hope to return someday soon to explore the high country in the north (and the food!) Thank you Italy!
